Helen is a Research Fellow at UCL (University College London). She returned to the UK in 2010, after three and a half years spent working in San Diego and Rhode Island in the United States. Her research web pages are here.
Her research interests are the optics and acoustics of ocean bubbles, the structure of the bubble plumes caused by breaking waves, and the influence of ocean bubbles on the atmosphere. In order to carry out ocean experiments, she carries out experiments on board research vessels, sometimes spending weeks at sea. She loves to scuba dive, and is a PADI divemaster and a certified scientific diver.
Back at UCL, she makes replica ocean bubbles and spies on them in a large glass tank in her laboratory. It is much easier to measure the characteristics of tiny bubbles when you don’t have to float about beside them at the same time.
