Brunel Museum - Blue Machine

Earth is home to a huge story that is rarely told – that of our ocean. Not the fish or the dolphins, but the massive ocean engine itself: what it does, why it works, and the many ways it has influenced animals, weather and human history & culture.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was among those fascinated by the ocean – designing the world’s largest ship, not once, not twice but three times. But what happens beneath the waves? Marine scientist Helen Czerski shares the rarely told story of the Blue Machine – Earth’s Dynamic Ocean.

Brunel’s final and largest ship, the SS Great Eastern, was built and launched at Millwall along the river Thames – a stone’s throw from his first project, the Thames Tunnel. Join Helen in the Tunnel Shaft as she shares the compelling stories from her new book – Blue Machine: How the Ocean Shapes our World.

The Brunel Museum is located at Rotherhithe, London.
